Tecomet Bolsters Instrument Manufacturing With Acquisition of HD Surgical

Tecomet, a global supplier of high-precision manufacturing solutions for complex tight-tolerance products, acquired HD Surgical, a supplier of complex, high-precision surgical instruments.

“The acquisition of HD Surgical greatly expands our ability to support the complex instrument needs of our mid-size customers,” said Tecomet CEO Mark Kemp.

Bristol, Pennsylvania-based HD Surgical—which employs 70 people and has been serving the medical device industry for over 25 years—supplies instruments to the orthopaedic, ENT and cardiovascular industries. The company’s capabilities include:

  • 9-axis CNC Swiss screw machining
  • Automated 5-axis milling robotic cells
  • CNC wire EDM
  • Complex instrument assembly
  • Laser welding, brazing, finishing, ultrasonic cleaning, in-house passivation, prototype and tooling development, video/optical inspection, laser marking and packaging services.

Tecomet’s acquisition of HD Surgical aligns with the company’s recent M&A activity, as well as the activity of other orthopaedic contract manufacturers. In 2016, Tecomet acquired Mountainside Medical, a manufacturer of components and instruments for minimally invasive surgery as well as orthopaedic and neurosurgical implants and instruments. NN Inc.’s 2Q18 acquisition of Paragon Medical boosted its capabilities in instruments and cases. Additionally, In’Tech Medical has purchased Turner Medical (2015), Ortho Solutions (2016), Pyxidis (2017) and Bradshaw Medical (2018) to expand its manufacturing of instruments and cases.

Tecomet’s 2018 investment announcements also include dedicating $14.5MM over the next three to five years to upgrade and expand existing facilities in Lansing, Michigan (which manufactures devices such as hip and knee replacements and trauma plates) and grow its employee headcount by 160. Tecomet (acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners in May 2017) operates 17 global manufacturing facilities in five countries and employs over 2,800 people.

ORTHOWORLD estimates for 2017 placed Tecomet first among the top five contract manufacturers serving the orthopaedic industry, ranked by revenue: Tecomet, Orchid, Cretex companies, Integer (now Viant) and Rosler.
