National Joint Registry for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: Findings from 10th Annual Report

The NJR Steering Committee launched its tenth report in late September. Data from more than 1.4 million procedures are now registered in the NJR, with considerable growth expected now that elbow and shoulder replacement data collection is underway (since April 2012) and Northern Ireland has joined the NJR (February 2013). The report also contains the second complete year of ankle replacement data.

Highlights from the report:

Hips

  • >90% of hip replacement patients had excellent, very good or good satisfaction following surgery
  • >85% of patients reported that problems were much better now vs. pre-op
  • In 2003, 55.3% of all hips were metal-on-poly cemented; in 2012, this configuration shrunk to 28.6%
  • Metal-on-poly uncemented hips in 6.2% of cases in 2003; nearly tripled to 17.8% in 2012
  • Ceramic-on-ceramic uncemented hips increased from 3.5% in 2003 to 19.2% in 2012
  • Metal-on-metal resurfacing peaked at 10.8% in 2006; down to 1.3% in 2012

Knees

  • >80% had excellent, very good or good satisfaction post-op
  • >70% of patients reported that problems were much better now vs. pre-op
  • Cemented total knees increased from 81.5% in 2003 to 86.9% in 2012
  • Unicondylar knee usage at 9%, patellofemoral use ranged from 1% in 2003 to 1.3% in 2012

Ankle/Elbow/Shoulder

  • 58% of ankle replacement patients were male, average age 68.8 for men, 64.7 for women
  • 67% of elbow replacement patients were female; average age 65.6 for men, 66.9 for women
  • 72% of shoulder replacement patients were female; average age 68.8 years for men, 73.2 for women; diagnosis recorded as osteoarthritis in 61% and cuff tear arthropathy in 24%
