Lowell Installs Motoman HP20D-6 Robot

Since completing its first robotics project to automate its CMM and PMM in 2010, Lowell has added another Browne and Sharp CMM that is tended by the same robot. Now, the company has installed a Motoman HP20D-6 robot to tend its Trumpf VectorMark laser markers. The new system uses a machine vision camera from PPT Vision to identify parts and pallets via QR codes. A storage rack and pallet system is used to stage parts for marking and move them to the In/Out bay. A rotary coupling at the end of the robot arm allows the parts to be spun freely maximizing marking flexibility. Like the CMM/PMM system, this Motoman has accuracy to +/- 0.06 mm.

The new robot frees Lowell’s laser marker operators to focus on higher level tasks rather than laboriously loading parts in and out of the machine.
