White Paper | Nano-engineered Titanium Coatings Improve Osseo-Integration and Anti-Microbial Properties of Implants

Interest and demand are growing for nano-engineered titanium coatings and surface treatments to improve the performance of PEEK- and metal-based implants used for orthopedic and spinal device applications. Recent work has demonstrated that highly-adherent nano-structured thin titanium coatings may offer a better alternative to plasma spray titanium for enhancing the osseo-integration of PEEK implants without the risk of impact delamination. Furthermore, it has been shown that titanium coatings with biomimetic nano-structured topographies can improve both the osseo-integration and anti-microbial property of the implant. This white paper brings together multiple studies, including those done by Aesculap, SeaSpine, N2 and Northeastern University.
