Beamalloy Technologies Granted Patent for Ion Beam Enhanced Deposition Coating Process

Beamalloy Technologies was issued U.S. Patent No. 10,543,094 covering its ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED) coating process technology for use on orthopedic implants and other precision mechanical parts. IBED-coated orthopedic implants claimed by this patent include hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers.

The newly-issued patent complements installation of a new proprietary closed-loop system processing chamber that increases the size and volume of components that can be coated in a rapid turnaround production mode. Coating thicknesses in the range of 2 – 10 microns are deposited directly on component surfaces without the need for mechanical or chemical pretreatments. The validated system produces coating properties that are highly repeatable and designed for the specific applications needed in orthopedic implants, medical devices and other precision mechanical components.

In January, the company completed installation of a large industrial-scale coating system based on its patented IBED technology. The system allows deposition of hard coatings such as Titanium Nitride directly on the surfaces of components made from materials including most metals, ceramics and glass.

In addition, our low application temperature (<300°F) eliminates the danger of dimensional distortion of precision metal components and allows coating of a variety of substrates including ceramics, plastics, and glass, which expands the number of potential uses.”
