Performance Advantages of IonGuard Ion Implantation Treatment for Titanium-based Orthopedic Implants

The increasing awareness and growing concerns about metal ion release and patient hypersensitivity reactions have renewed interest in titanium for orthopedic implants, such as knee, hip and extremity joint replacement. This white paper discusses the efficacy of ion implantation treatment to improve titanium surface properties, including enhanced hardness and wear resistance, fretting wear resistance, lower friction and improved hydrophilicity or wettability. The results of several studies demonstrating these property enhancements and their benefits for articulating titanium-based orthopedic implants are presented.
