DePuy Synthes, Zebra Medical to Partner on AI in Orthopedics

Zebra Medical Vision and DePuy Ireland entered into a global co-development and commercialization agreement to bring artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities to orthopedics, based on imaging data.

Zebra-Med’s AI technology uses algorithms to create three-dimensional models from x-ray images as an affordable alternative to CT scans and MRI imaging for pre-operative surgical planning. It may enable more frequent use of other tools, like patient-specific instruments or robotic assistance, without reliance on traditional MRI or CT-based imaging.

This technology will be introduced as part of DePuy Synthes’ VELYS Digital Surgery solutions for pre-op, operative and post-op patient care. VELYS is planned to pave the way in orthopedics with a platform comprising connected technologies that leverage data insights for patients, surgeons and healthcare systems before, during and after surgery.

Zebra Medical is funded in part by Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, Inc. The company has raised $52 million in funding to date; its offerings are installed in hospitals globally, from Australia to India, Europe to the U.S, and the LATAM region.
