The spine segment accounts for 18% of the global orthopedic market’s value. Excluding biologics, we estimate its revenue at $9.3 billion. Combined, the 15 companies featured in our infographic account for 86% of that $9.3 billion.
As you’ll observe, Medtronic leads its closest competitor (DePuy Synthes) by one billion and some change. Similarly, the new #3 (Stryker, due to its acquisition of K2M) is approximately $500 million behind the #2. It will be interesting to see if Stryker keeps the #3 position given its close proximity to NuVasive…they are neck and neck.
Once you begin eyeing #5 on down, you quickly realize that spine companies—or spine revenue at diversified companies—gets a lot smaller, very broadly.
Several hundred smaller companies make up the remaining 14% market share.
