Coatings Developer, Manufacturer Sono-Tek Exhibits Growth Trends

Sono-Tek, developer and manufacturer of ultrasonic coating systems for markets including orthopaedics, recently reported significant revenue growth and an increase in gross margin.

“We had excellent growth trends through the year. Strong market conditions combined with the expansion of our sales effort drove sales up 14% to $11.0 million,” said Dr. Christopher L. Coccio, Chairman and CEO. “Additionally, the strong operating leverage inherent in our business was evident in our measurable margin expansion. Continued implementation of LEAN manufacturing practices this past year were apparent in our strong cash generation. Our productivity focus has resulted in a significant reduction in inventory requirements and is also increasingly contributing to improved operating efficiencies and cycle time reduction.”

Further, Sono-Tek attributes part of its recent financial growth to higher sales in the medical industry, the result of specialized application expertise for polymer and other active nanomaterial coatings on implantable devices.

For orthopaedic applications, Sono-Tek utilizes ultrasonic nozzle systems to apply uniform, thin film coatings onto implants to either promote or inhibit bioactivity with titanium or cobalt chromium devices, reducing HAIs and promoting osseointegration. Solutions sprayed include hydroxyapatite, carbon nanotubes, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory solutions, and hydrophilic polymers containing thermoplastic polyurethanes. The company offers a variety of ultrasonic nozzle configurations, accompanied by fully programmable XYZ motion systems to deliver precision coating solutions.

According to Sono-Tek, the advantages of ultrasonic coatings include:

  • Major material cost savings versus dip coating methods
  • Compatibility of non-clogging with common polymer solutions
  • Capability of spraying highly uniform coatings onto complex substrates
  • Ultrasonic vibrations deagglomerate particles in suspension for more homogenous coatings
  • Controllable spray allows for coating morphology to be adjusted for more porous or smooth characteristics
