Orchid to Expand Coating Capabilities in China

Orchid Orthopedic Solutions intends to invest in the Chinese orthopaedic market by offering Vacuum Titanium Plasma Spray (VPS) coating services at its Suzhou, China facility by the end of 2016. This supports Orchid’s strategy to provide full value stream services to the local Asia market and complements their current hydroxylapatite coating services.

“This endeavor supports our goal of building full value stream services on three continents. We anticipate adding more capabilities in the future depending on the needs of the local market,” says Christopher Norbye, International Executive Vice President for Orchid.

Orchid’s addition of VPS coating services follows its acquisition of Cam Bioceramics’ coating facility in China, a move that allowed the supplier to expand its geographic reach into Asia. Eurocoatings and Surface Dynamics also recently announced a new facility to open in China.

The Chinese market in particular is attractive to orthopaedic companies because of its aging population, increasing per capita wealth and increase in common health conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Additionally, while Asia is home for 60 percent of the world’s population, it only accounts for 16 percent of the world’s global orthopaedic device market, meaning there is room for growth.
