Empirical Testing: Celebrating 15 Years with Expansion of Services

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Since 1998, Empirical Testing Corp. has committed time, resources and expertise to assisting clients in the intricate process of bringing medical devices to market. Thanks to the support of clients and the company’s progress-driven culture, what began as a single company with one employee testing medical devices has grown into Empirical Technologies Corp., a family of businesses that offers the full range of consulting, testing, manufacturing and other services client companies need to turn their brilliant ideas into medical breakthroughs.

The new parent company (Empirical Technologies Corp.) is composed of Empirical Testing Corp., Empirical Machine and Empirical Consulting. Each subsidiary specializes in one of the critical elements of attaining approval from the Food and Drug Administration and other international regulatory organizations for new medical devices.

“We’re pleased that we can now be there for our clients for every step of the process,” said Dawn Lissy, president of Empirical Technologies Corp. “Every person and every idea that’s come through our doors over the past 15 years has helped us grow and learn, so we have the full range of expertise, products and services they need to get their devices to market.”

The companies began as Empirical Testing Corp. (ETC) in Cleveland in 1998. Lissy had worked developing new medical devices and noted the few options available for mechanical testing, a crucial step in gaining regulatory approval. At its inception, ETC consisted of a single employee (Lissy) until she brought on her husband Chris the following year. The Lissys relocated to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2004 to meet the growing needs of their company and family. At the time, 10,000 square feet and four employees handled the workload. Nine years later, that space has doubled, and 25 people now work for the three subsidiaries that make up Empirical Technologies Corp.

According to Lissy, the growth of the Empirical companies is in response to the demand for more and better medical devices that enhance the lives of millions of people

“You’ve got increasingly larger populations turning to orthopedic medical devices for better quality of life,” she said. “They’re going to force game-changing technologies to happen.”

In response to the demand, numerous small companies and individuals are coming up with more and better ways to maintain and improve their health, activity, mobility and pain management. From inception, it can take over a decade for an individual product to make it to the market.

“For us, it’s how can we help those innovators who may not understand what’s needed to get their products to market,” Lissy said. “We know there are folks who have game-changing ideas, but they don’t necessarily know how to bring them to fruition. Seeing their products enter the market and doctors entrust their patients to those products reminds us of the important role we play.”
