Study: Rotation Medical Bioinductive Implant Promotes Consistent Rotator Cuff Healing, Mitigates Tear Progression

Study results indicate that Rotation Medical’s Bioinductive Implant, a system for rotator cuff repair, may consistently heal rotator cuff tears, increase tendon thickness and prevent tear progression.

Thirty-three patients were assessed at 3 and 12 months post-op, with 12-month results including:

  • Significant improvement in clinical scores, with mean tendon thickness increased by 2mm, and new tissue indistinguishable from underlying tendon
  • 94% of patients showing complete healing or considerable reduction in defect size
  • 94% of patients citing satisfaction to the level of “agree” to “strongly agree”
  • No tears progressing to full-thickness in patients who followed the post-op rehab protocol

The REBUILD Registry Study is also underway, measuring key health economic drivers in support of use of the implant. “As health systems transition to value-based care, data like these are becoming increasingly necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of medical devices on indicators such as patient satisfaction,” said Martha Shadan, president and CEO of Rotation Medical.

Earlier this month, Smith & Nephew completed its previously-announced purchase of Rotation Medical for US $125.0MM. The acquisition cost may be increased by a further $85.0MM over five years, contingent on financial performance.

According to ORTHOWORLD estimates, SNN is the second-largest arthroscopy/soft tissue repair company, deriving more than $1.2 billion or ~37% of its revenue from the segment.
