Solvay’s Zeniva PEEK Chosen for Lumbar Cage in Japan

Solvay’s Zeniva® PEEK was selected by KiSCO to create the first non-metal lumbar cage for interbody fusion to be made in Japan. The device is only commercially available in Japan, where it gained approval from the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency in late 2018. KiSCO commenced sales in 1Q19.

KiSCO chose the material based on its fatigue resistance, radiotranslucence and a modulus similar to bone. In clinical trials, Zeniva PEEK enabled the spinal cage to maintain structural stability even when screws were used to expand the spacers.

Zenviva PEEK is 30% carbon fiber reinforced and is part of the Solviva® Biomaterials line for implantable devices. Solvay’s other medical-grade plastics are used in reusable and single-use instruments as well as sterilzation cases and trays.
