Exactech Acquires XpandOrtho

Exactech acquired XpandOrtho, a designer of soft tissue balancing instruments for knee replacement. Exactech will use the technology to enhance its ExactechGPS® computer-assisted navigation for shoulder and knee replacement.

One of the two co-founders of XpandOrtho developed e-Knee, the first “smart” knee prosthesis designed to collect detailed information on forces that occur when people walk, climb or sit down.

In 2017, XpandOrtho gained FDA 510(k) clearance in for the XO1 Knee Balancing System, intended as a tool for adjustment of soft tissue to reduce instability from flexion gap asymmetry in total knee replacement. The intra-articular device uses sensors within the joint to guide ligament balance, and a pneumatic-based bellows system to wirelessly communicate with a display to provide the surgeon with gap balancing feedback throughout the knee’s range of motion.

Exactech CEO David Petty said, “The acquisition supports Exactech’s growth strategy and commitment to improving surgeon experience and patient outcomes. Their innovative ligament balancing technology provides a strong framework for integration into our ExactechGPS system to further advance our Truliant® Total Knee System. We look forward to collaborating with founders Cliff Colwell and Darryl D’Lima on continued development of advanced knee replacement technology.”
